How are Fixed Costs Treated in Accounting? As an example, you might one day return or resell equipment at purchase price, but you cannot expect compensation for the cost of your office’s utilities. Are All Fixed Costs Considered Sunk Costs?Īll sunk costs are considered fixed costs in financial accounting, but not all fixed costs are considered sunk. We have provided examples of direct fixed costs below. They’re expenses that have to be paid by the company, and are completely independent of any activities that are specific to the business itself.įixed costs are generally considered indirect, as they don’t apply to the company’s production services, but there are certain fixed costs that are direct. ![]() Thus, uncountable infinities can be considered “bigger” than countable infinities. This means that if we tried to go through and assign a positive whole number to every real number, we would never be able to do it, even if we used all the whole numbers. In the 19th century, Georg Cantor discovered that the set of real numbers is uncountable. So the set of whole numbers is a countable infinite and so is the set of all rational numbers. We say a set of elements is countably infinite if the elements of that set can be put into a 1-to-1 correspondence with the positive whole numbers. Modern math has also proven that there are different magnitudes of infinity as well. There are infinite positive whole numbers (1,2,3,4…) and an infinite amount of lines, triangles, spheres, cubes, polygons, and so on. Modern math has infinities all over the place. The theorem has not been proven for the general case of any closed curve though. For example, it has been proven that circles and squares have an infinite amount of inscribable squares, obtuse triangles have exactly one, while right and acute triangles have exactly 2 and 3 respectively. The inscribed square theorem has been proven for a number of special cases of curves. The inscribed square problem asks whether every possible closed non-intersecting curve contains the 4 points of a square. This is known as the inscribed square problem. Credit: C Rocchini via WikiCommons CC-BY SA 3.0 The inscribed square problem concerns whether or not any generic closed non-intersecting curve contains the 4 points of a square. Next, try to find some 4 points located on the curve such that you can draw a square using those points. The curve can have as many squiggles and bends as you want the only conditions are that you have to close it end-to-end and it cannot intersect itself. Therefore, the larger an integer is, the more likely that at least one of these combinations will consist of only primes. In general, the larger an integer is, the more likely it can be expressed as the sum of two numbers. The informal justification for this claim comes from the nature of the distribution of prime numbers. ![]() ![]() Although mathematicians do not have a rigorous proof yet, the general consensus is that the conjecture is true. To date, the Goldbach conjecture has been verified for all even integers up to 4 × 10 18 but an analytic proof still eludes mathematician. The first 50 even numbers written as the sum of two primes. The Goldbach conjecture was first proposed by German mathematician Christian Goldbach in 1742, who posited the conjecture in correspondence with Leonhard Euler. GB: “Every even integer greater than 4 can be written as the sum of two prime numbers.” The question is, can you keep doing this forever? That is, can you write every possible even natural number as the sum of two primes? The Goldbach conjecture answers this question in the affirmative. For our first 5 elements of our list, we get: Next, take each even number and try to rewrite it as the sum of 2 prime numbers. First, take all the even natural numbers greater than 2 (e.g. Let’s start our list with an extremely famous and easy-to-understand problem. With that in mind, we are going to take a look at 6 of the most difficult unsolved math problems in the world. Therefore, it stands to reason that the hardest math problems in the world are ones that no mathematician has solved yet. Others such as the 7 Bridges of Königsberg problem seem complex but have a deceptively simple answer.Ī reasonable metric to determine how “difficult” a math problem is could be the number of people that have solved it. Some math problems, such as the infamous question 6 of the 1988 Math Olympiad are easy to understand but monstrously complex to solve. ![]() “Difficulty” is a subjective metric and what is difficult for some may not be difficult for others. In the European Theater, P-47 pilots were responsible for destroying more than 7,000 enemy aircraft-more than half in air-to-air combat. It was unparalleled as a ground-support aircraft and it was also a great dogfighter.” The Thunderbolt was the hammer: big and strong, it could take a lot of punishment and still deliver a lethal blow. “It was not as famous as the P-51 Mustang, but it ranks as one of the best for that era. It was arguably the best ground-attack aircraft America had at that time. Fully loaded with pilot, fuel and armaments, it topped out at more than 17,500 pounds-yet was exceptionally fast as a fighter-bomber, achieving a top speed of 426 miles per hour. Weighing 10,000 pounds empty, the Thunderbolt was the largest single-engine fighter built by any country during World War II. All of the kills would come at the controls of the P-47, one of the most rugged fighter planes of the war. He would go on to shoot down 28 enemy aircraft to become America’s top ace in Europe. Those two kills nearly 80 years ago this month were his fourth and fifth of World War II. On November 26, 1943, Major Gabby Gabreski, flying his P-47 Thunderbolt, downed two German Me-110s to become a World War II flying ace. It spiraled to the ground in a massive fireball. You may find it hard to relate to an aloof personality, and you can be sure they have just as hard of a time relating to you. #5 Aloof people struggle to relate to others ![]() They have a built-in, instinctual reaction that tells them to avoid people who do this and withdraw from any conversations that take a turn in this direction. But the aloof individual will wonder what your agenda is if you begin grilling them about their marital status, children, career ambitions, political views, personal triumphs or disappointments, or any other topic that requires them to reveal intimate details about their lives. Your attempts to draw out an aloof person might seem like normal conversational behavior from your perspective. #4 Aloof individuals don’t like to answer a lot of personal questions They tend to see this type of dialogue as needless chatter, and they don’t like wasting their precious time on anything they consider lightweight or inconsequential. If people are gossiping about celebrities or local dignitaries, or telling tales out of school about co-workers or others they know, you can be sure the aloof person will be off by themselves, completely ignoring the conversation. #3 Aloof people aren’t into gossip, small talk, or idle chit-chat But aloof individuals see this as a small price to pay for not having their most intimate thoughts and feelings exposed to public scrutiny. Their emotional reticence leads many people to conclude that aloof people are cold and disinterested. This is especially true when the emotions are strong and might show sensitivity or vulnerability. Aloof people are uncomfortable with open displays of emotion in most instances, whether surrounded by close acquaintances or strangers. Honoring their personal preference for privacy, aloof people make a great effort to keep their emotions hidden and in check. #2 Aloof people don’t like to show their emotions in public They can function in social situations if forced to do so, but they try to avoid being put in those situations if at all possible. In general they enjoy reflecting on their own thoughts and experiences more than they enjoy pursuing new friendships or seeking out the companionship of family members. They avoid what they see as unnecessary entanglements with others, and their definition of “unnecessary” is noticeably broader than that of most people. Among those who do know them, people with aloof personalities are seen as reserved and reticent, and generally more concerned about what is happening in their own lives than in the lives of their companions. As a result, those who don’t really know them are usually content to keep it that way. To those who don’t know them well, an aloof person may seem cold and unfriendly. They don’t seem to have much interest in starting or joining conversations, and this is a persistent pattern of behavior. They tend to separate themselves from others, physically, socially, and emotionally. Even with friends and family members they will often appear distant, distracted, and uninvolved. If you want to explore with coherence, here are three of the basic meditation exercises you can do to bring you in a state of coherence-and maybe help others around you by entraining them into the waves of love, compassion, and gratitude. As an example, when you are angry, your heart sends uncoherent signals, and when you feel grateful, you are emanating a beautiful coherent signal out into the world. Remember that coherence is like a frequency wave. I needed more explanations, and I knew that heart coherence was a good lead. I was not drifting away from meditation but deepening my practice by listening within and adjusting my practice to what felt right. I knew meditation was good for me, but before that moment, I couldn’t comprehend the depth of my practice. I knew that even though I was not doing exactly as what my meditation teacher told me to do, I was doing fine. In that moment, I knew I was onto something. According to him (and the monitor), I was “in the zone.” My heart coherence was at 94 percent-and all I had been doing was meditating. He looked at the monitor and asked me, “What did you do?” I back looked at him, puzzled. I’ve also had profound, meaningful, and transformative experiences in moments when I was exploring my own path.Īfter about ten minutes, the man came back in the room. I observed physical sensations and after about a minute or two, I was in my usual meditation state. I was thinking about whether I was doing it right, but I let that go. I began my usual meditation routine slowing my breath, watching thoughts passing by. He said he would measure my ability to relax and manage stress. The practitioner asked me to stay calm and relax while staying in the room by myself for the duration of the test. Though I have been diligent about my daily practice over the years, I’ve also had profound, meaningful, and transformative experiences in moments when I was drifting away from the actual meditation technique when I was exploring my own path. I have been meditating for over 20 years and I have explored many techniques-it was my personal inner experience during meditation that first encouraged me to learn about heart coherence. Our hearts can also entrain the hearts of other people around us-research illustrates our hearts actually respond and are connected to the oscillations of the earth frequencies. What does that mean? The heart is basically its own brain. Scientists have found that the signals the heart continuously sends to the brain actually influence the function of higher brain centers involved in perception, cognition, and emotional processing. When we cultivate appreciation and compassion, our heart rhythm actually becomes more consistent-which is linked to a greater sense of wellbeing. But what if we could train our hearts to be in coherence more often? What if we could entrain others in our journey to happiness just by being in a state of deep appreciation for life itself? ![]() We all seek different ways to live more at ease.
